When I saw its poster, something about it looked unusual and of course that unusual thing was Samri. The movie is 10x time better than its contemporaries and in spite of occasionally losing steam with interludes of "Sholay" parody thrown in, was and still is one the finest horror movies ever made in India. Ramsay Bros. could never actually recreate the magic of Purana Mandir, even though they made other successful horror movies like Veerana and Bandh Darwaza. For some reason, Veerana and Bandh Darwaza did not actually measure up to my expectations. Veerana has shades of 1970s British movie Vampyers and Bandh Darwaza is kind of Indian Count Dracula. They made even TV horror show in the early 1990s which was quite success but quality wise Ramsay's were never good. Purana Mandir remains the best horror movie ever to come out of the house of Ramsay's.

Purana Mandir is out an out a spicey horror movie with a backstory that is kind of often told around campfires and or a typical rural evening gathering in India, when farmers and peasants come back home after a day of hard physical labor. Stories are told and "chilam" (a hand held contraption used for smoking tobbaco) is passed around. Purana Mandir is menacingly creepy at times for example the the blood curdling scream in wilderness, the fog, the ruins, the portrait that "moves" its eyes, tracking people and all other stuff. If a real horror fan wants to enjoy the movie without the annoying musical and comical interludes, it makes sense to edit the movie and just keep the relevant stuff. It will cut the movie length by a good hour and a half!

I know a lot of people who think Purana Mandir is anything but scary are actually grudging admirers of the movie, who are just too ashamed to admit that they love the movie.

I am not sure if any interpretation can be drawn from Purana Mandir as to what various things in the movie actually signify or symbolize. Perhaps, had they put more effort into making the story, it would have been open to interpretation among the horror movie fans.Rudrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13690768590793404419noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-942353096858461936.post-9977069052399901142013-01-17T11:02:23.556-08:002013-01-17T11:02:23.556-08:00Blood, pretty Indian girls, and thick mustaches.
